In the list of USB ports, 0-9 are enabled. Tried the restarting and using another port neither of which worked. Cannot believe this fixed it!! I have plugged in another (non-Apple) key board into one of the USB ports and the original mouse into the other USB.
This works! All the USB ports are only USB 2.0 as well. I have tried every, and I mean everything else, including taking it into the Mac Store. Stumped (I hate being stumped) I've advised her to get a new keyboard.
