I don't know that there are any specific "Apple-approved" external drive brands.I'm not a big fan of externals from WD, etc. All my work from the last several months is inaccessible and I have to go off memory. Then I hooked it up and it made a terrible beep every second for the 5 minutes I could stand to listen to it. Never had a single issue running different USB 2.0 drives. I would not recommend putting the whole laptop in the freezer as this could cause serious problems to the LCD screen, battery, and other components. Personally I have no respect for Seagate external drives. I'm just sayin. by freezing the disk you make the platter less ‘warped' giving you a chance to read the disk before it begins to warp from the heat.
